We use reference books including academic publications, to categorise and date to the nearest century each item we sell. We purchase items that are easy to catagorise, like iron arrowheads, bronze brooches, iron fire starters and small bronze items. The ancient artefacts we make into jewellery are made from bronze, characteristic of ancient times and used extensively by the Romans before the 6th century AD.
Where were the artifacts found and why so inexpensive?
Ancient artifacts are more common than is generally believed. Most ancient cultures existed for very long periods of time, had large territories and populations of millions of people. In fact, at the peak of the Roman Empire (100 - 300AD) the population was 50-60 million. Many artefacts of the ancient world haven't been destroyed they have just been lost and buried. Metal detector enthusiasts find and supply Ancient Shapes with bronze and iron artifacts. They identify the areas to excavate by using maps of ancient battlefields (farm areas today).
Does Ancient Shapes have a licence to import ancient artifacts?
Most countries in Europe have restricted the export of all ancient artefacts, leaving the supply of such items at risk in the future. Most of the artefacts (low cost small items) we sell come from Eastern Europe, where export of such artefacts is still possible. Antiquity dealers from countries that allow the export of large, rare, expensive, high- grade artefacts usually require a licence. Ancient Shapes specialise in small, low cost inexpensive items where a licence in most cases is not required at this time.
